Congratulations! You've made it through another school year! I know it was a long one. It always is. As your librarian, I'm right there with you. Just because I'm an adult, doesn't mean I don't get excited about days off, too! However, ALSO as your librarian, I really hope that you spend at least a bit of time this summer, reading a book.

Or listening to a book.

Heck, look at some books about artwork. You don't even have to read the little text under the pictures.

Just, open a book at least!

Studies have shown a bazillion times over (yes, bazillion is a word...I looked it up....) that reading over summer can really help your brain with preventing at least a bit of that summer slide. I know, for some of you, sitting still for more than 10 minutes and making your brain work can sometimes be the opposite of what you want to do during summer. That's fine. We all should do things we don't totally love sometimes. It's what being human is all about.

If you want to be the best human you can possible be though, seriously, read something. Engage your brain to focus on words that create worlds inside your head. Read a book that's being made into a movie and compare the two (spoiler, the book is ALWAYS better than the movie). Listen to an audio book from our T.I.E. account (see the blog post on how to go about doing that). Ask your parents or friends for a recommendation. Look up the best loved books of all time and challenge yourself to read just ONE of those this summer. No matter what you read, it's going to force your brain to create new little twisty, windy nerves and bits, and that's never, ever a bad thing.

Well....unless it's some sort of weird alien twisty, windy thing. Then we're pretty much doomed at that point....

Anyway, back to my point.

READ SOMETHING.

....and then tell me all about it when you come back.

Have a great summer and I'll see you in the fall!

Sincerely,

Your Friendly High School Librarian
