I've been trying to balance out some of our library sections for the past year, as I may have mentioned previously. Over the summer, we got quite a number of books in, and I'm happy to say our graphic novel section is starting to grow nicely. As of now, I haven't been focusing really, on the traditional comics (i.e. Marvel, Dark Horse, DC...etc). There's such a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE number of those. Plus, you have to worry about timelines and alternate timelines and which character out of the 3,472 you want to follow... It's a bit overwhelming.

(Though, if there's a specific character you just absolutely love, you're more than welcome to swing by and request it. This is, after all, your library, and you should have some say in what you'd like on the shelves.)

So, here's a quick run down of the current new graphic novels.

Estranged

by Ethan M. Aldridge

Fantasy/Adventure

Edmund is a fae. The Childe is human. Normally, this wouldn't be too terrible a situation, except that this is not a normal situation. Edmund is a changeling. He and The Childe were switched a birth, and now Edmund lives in the world of humans, with all his fae powers which he must keep secret, and The Child lives among the fae as a curiosity of sorts, with only a few he can call real friends.

When a cruel sorceress takes the throne, however, the two must work together to save not only themselves, but both worlds as well.

Be Prepared

by Vera Brosgol

Realistic Fiction

Vera is Russian, living in the suburbs of America, and feels as though she just doesn't fit in. When she finds a Russian Summer camp, she begs her mother to send her, hoping for a sense of community with others like her. What she gets instead is drama, bullies and nightmare outhouses. Camp wasn't at ALL what she was expecting...

The Trolls Will Feast! (The Creeps #2)

by Chris Schweitzer

Humor(ous?) Horror

This is book #2 in The Creeps series. I'm currently working on acquiring book #1. Sometimes that's just how the ball rolls.

In Pumpkins County, it's not too weird when weird stuff happens. Monster attacks, zombie frogs...it's all just par for the course to the townsfolks. Well, for most of them anyway. 4 kids have teamed up to start investigating the weird goings-on in their town. They call themselves The Creeps, and they are on a mission to uncover what on Earth is going on in their town. In this book, they've found a whole new monster: TROLLS. The kids have their work cut out for them, as they become troll hunters, in an attempt to track down this group of monsters before it's too late, and their town becomes the next meal source.

COMING SOON! (Any day now)

The Doughnut Kingdom (Cucumber Quest book #1)

by Gigi D.G.

Fantasy/Adventure

If you're like me, you're looking at this cover and thinking,

"Hm. This is in a middle/high school library? Isn't it kinda....babyish?"

Believe me, when I first saw this series, I did quite a bit of research because I completely judged this book by it's cover. HOWEVER, reviews all seemed to be pretty awesome, comments seemed positive, so I decided to give it a chance. I'm almost 40 and I have to tell you, I was getting a pretty decent laugh out of this. Though the artwork may look juvenile, the story more than makes up for that. It's silly, it's quirky, it's intriguing, it's humorous, and overall, I'm really digging it. Give it a try. The worst that happens is you won't like it and you return it.

In a magical realm of 7 kingdoms, a great hero is needed to defeat the Nightmare Knight. What they get instead, is a nerdy magician by the name of Cucumber, who only wants to go back to school and learn stuff. He's aided in his quest by his very heroic little sister, named Almond. Together, the two will have to go on daring adventures and fight numerous monsters to save the 7 kingdoms from total destruction.
