The annual EngineerGirl Essay Contest encourages students to write about the role of engineering in society and the impact it has on our world. Essays for the current contest, which is entitled, “Engineering For Your Community,” should convince other to improve the community’s infrastructure.
For each essay, applicants must choose one system (transportation, water treatment, waste management, energy, communication, financial security, healthcare, public safety, and recreation) and find one aspect of the system that needs improvement. All essays must be original work and resources must be clearly cited. More details are provided on the website.
The contest is open to individual girls and boys in each of three categories:
• Grades 3 through 5 (ages 8 to 11)
• Grades 6 through 8 (ages 12 to 14)
• Grades 9 through 12 (ages 15 to 18)
At grades 3 through 5, students’ essays in this category should be 400 to 700 words. At grades 6 through 8, students’ essays in this category should be 600 to 1,100 words. At grades 9 through 12, students’ essays in this category should be 1,000 to 1,500 words. Essays are judged based on the following criteria: effectiveness in communicating ideas and fully addressing the requirements of the contest; accurate research and analytical thinking; and creativity and originality in the content selection and presentation. All winning entries and honorable mention entries are published on the EngineerGirl website.
